CQC Registration Requirements
Registering with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is a legal requirement for all care providers. The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England, ensuring that all services meet essential standards of quality and safety. As we all know registering with the CQC can be a stressful and often drawn out process - so before you kick off your registration application, let’s break down the key requirements you need to meet to become a registered care provider.
Fit and Proper Persons
First and foremost, care providers must appoint a Registered Manager to oversee daily operations. Both the manager and provider need to be considered “fit and proper persons.” This means they should have the relevant qualifications, experience, and a clean criminal record, as evidenced by a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Regulated Activities
When registering, you’ll need to specify the regulated activities your service will offer. These could range from personal care and nursing to more specialised treatments or diagnostic services. If these activities do change in the future you will have to submit a notification to change your regulated activities. This can be done through the CQC portal and once approved by the CQC you may then begin these new activities.

There are 14 standards which cover topics like providing person-centred care, ensuring people’s dignity and safety, and maintaining adequate staffing levels. Providers must submit a Statement of Purpose, outlining their aims, the types of services they’ll offer, and where they will operate. Policies and Procedures
Having the right policies and procedures in place is crucial. These include safeguarding, infection control, health and safety, and staff training protocols. This includes showing the CQC that they have the necessary funds to manage day-to-day operations, staff wages, and unexpected costs. Providers must also have appropriate insurance to cover potential liabilities, including public liability and professional indemnity insurance, to protect against claims from accidents, negligence, or malpractice that could arise in the course of providing care.
