What is Special Measures?

Special Measures is a regulatory intervention by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) triggered when a care service receives consecutive 'Inadequate' ratings within six months.

This designation signifies significant concerns about care quality and initiates measures aimed at driving improvement. Consequences may include reduced income, local authority concerns, negative media coverage, and loss of consumer confidence.

For some providers, the prospect of Special Measures prompts difficult decisions, such as rapid service closure, due to potential repercussions.
