What is the Fit Person Interview?
If you’re on the path to becoming a registered manager for a social care service, GP practice, or dental surgery, you’ve likely encountered the term “fit person interview.” This interview stage is a critical step in the CQC registration process and can feel rather daunting, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be. Here, we’ll break down what the fit person interview entails and how you can confidently prepare for it.
What is the Fit Person Interview?
The fit person interview is a competency-based discussion conducted by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to assess whether an applicant meets the regulatory requirements to manage a care service. It’s not designed to trip you up or act as a test with pass or fail scores. Instead, it provides an opportunity for the interviewer to evaluate your knowledge, skills, and approach to managing a service.
The CQC is interested in several key areas:
Good character, honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity
Knowledge of relevant legislation and compliance requirements
Managerial and supervisory skills
Commitment to providing safe, effective, and person-centred care
How Long Does the Interview Last?
The interview typically lasts around an hour, although CQC advises applicants to allocate two to three hours. In some cases, the interview might be as short as 30 minutes.
Where are Fit Person Interviews Held?
Previously the CQC would conduct inteviews at a CQC regional office, however due to the increasing strain on their resources, interviews are now typically conducted via the telephone or video call.
